Space on the award-covered walls in South Sioux's city hall is getting even more crowded as yet another national honor came to the local community. The recognition, as the National League of Cities (NLC) silver award winner for municipal excellence was presented last week at the groups annual conference in Orlando, Fla.
Sioux City South Sioux City Administrator Lance Hedquist, Mayor Bob Giese, and Councilmen Al Bengtson and Dennis Nelson attended the session in Orlando, Fla. to accept the honor for cities of 50,000 and under population.
The award, sponsored by the NLC and CH2M Hill, an international engineering and construction company, comes in recognition of South Sioux City's "unique public-private partnership" collaboration with the Siouxland Y and South Sioux City School District for construction of the $10 million Norm Waitt Sr. Siouxland Y located on the riverfront in South Sioux. It was one of 57 projects submitted in the competition to advance to the final judging.
South Sioux City Councilman Merrill Hale, commenting on the city's latest honor, credited Hedquist as city administrator for his role in "thinking outside the box" relative the Y project. "He directed us down the right path on the project," Hale said. "It's been fantastic to have the organization here in South Sioux City, right here in our town, and we love it."
Bristol, Virginia is recipient of the gold award in the 50,000 and under population category for its Broadband Partnerships and Sustainability Project. Winners of the gold and silver awards received $2,000 and $1,000 cash awards respectively with the awards to be donated to a community non-profit organization of the city's choice.
"These (winning) cities," Donald Borut, executive director, NLC, said, "have demonstrated leadership in imagination in creating municipal programs. The programs are illustrative of the types of projects that are improving the lives of residents in cites and towns across the nation."
