PTECFF chosen for Sherwood Foundation matching grant

Only four funds got the good news, and the Pender-Thurston Education & Community Foundation Fund (PTECFF) was one of them.

The Sherwood Foundation, which was established by Susan Buffett in 1999, offers a matching grant for communities. For every $2 donated to PTECFF’s community savings account between now and Dec. 31, 2018, an additional $1 will be added by the grant.

Leaders of the PTECFF first learned of the Sherwood Foundation in 2013. Committee members then participated in a competitive application process and were eventually one of just four Nebraska Community Foundation funds to be selected to receive a challenge grant.

The others are Plattsmouth, Valley County and Brown County. The local fund was chosen due to its commitment to demonstrating determination, confidence and hope for the future of the Pender/Thurston community.

The challenge put before the community is to raise $500,000 for PTECFF’s endowment by the end of 2018 deadline, and once achieved the Sherwood Foundation will grant the local fund an additional $250,000 for a total of $750,000.

The Sherwood Foundation’s intent is to “strengthen communities with a spirit of determination, build local capacity and deepened participation in community life.”

The PTECFF is not designed to raise funds for bricks and mortar, but rather to build an endowment that sees its earnings paid out annually for projects that benefit citizens for the longest period of time. Its principal is never spent.

Some examples of where funds have gone include:

• Pender and Thurston volunteer fire and rescue departments

• Pender Public Schools

• Pender Veterans Memorial

• House Memorial Library

• Pender Betterment Group

• Citizens Improving Thurston

• Pender Community Center

• More than 40 scholarships totaling more than $20,000

• Pender Village Beautification Committee

• Main Street Thriftique

• Pender-Thurston Summer Rec

• Playground equipment

The PTECFF can accept a variety of types of gifts that can be applied to the challenge. Those include cash, agricultural commodities, IRAs and marketable securities. To make a gift or request more information, send mail to P.O. Box 662, Pender, NE 68047. Checks should be made payable to PTECFF.

The PTECFF is an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation. This enables donors to make tax-deductible contributions to the fund.
