Four South Sioux City firefighters recently received awards for their quick thinking and use of the “JAWS of Life” to save the lives of drivers involved in vehicular accidents.

Lt. Kevin Ott, Zach Daniels, Toby English and Aaron Merithew received certificates from Hurst Manufacturing, the company that makes the JAWS of Life, for their heroic actions. Ott received two certificates for saving two drivers on two separate occasions.

“I was honored to present the recognition to the personnel that received these awards and will always acknowledge those that perform above and beyond the basic scope of the job,” said Clint Merithew, fire chief. “Each firefighter should have the feeling of accomplishment that they participated in a critical rescue that saved the life and limbs of an entrapped person.”

This is the first time the department has received such awards.
