Kleinberg talks with Trump during DC trip focused on immigration issues

Dakota County Sheriff Chris Kleinberg said that the several days he spent last week discussing local immigration issues with legislative leaders in Washington D.C. were constructive.

“I was surprised at how it went,” he said. “I didn't expect it to go as well as it did.”

Expenses were paid for by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, also known as FAIR. FAIR is a lobbying group fighting for stricter immigration laws and describes themselves on their website as “a non-partisan, public interest organization.”

Kleinberg met with several high level administrators, including the president and vice president.

“[Trump] was genuinely sincere and wanted to stay and keep talking to [the group of sheriffs FAIR brought to DC],” he said.

“I came away with a lot of information knowing that the administration is actually doing something about illegal immigration instead of the lip service we've had over the last 20 years,” Kleinberg continued.

Additionally, Kleinberg said he made contacts with those in the national immigration office and learned of several grants that could be of benefit to Dakota County.

“Anything to help,” he said. “It's expensive to run a jail.”
