South Sioux City’s defensive pressure was too much for Homer to handle as the Lady Cardinals rolled to a 73-32 victory over the Lady Knights in an NSAA Hall of Fame jamboree scrimmage last Tuesday night in the Mini-Dome.
The defending Class B state champions collected a whopping 31 steals on the night, many of which leading to easy layups on the other end.
Junior Marybeth Rasmussen came up with the most thefts on defense, piling up eight steals to pace the South Sioux City defensive effort.
Head coach Molly Hornbeck’s squad clicked on offense early on, rolling to a 20-10 lead after one quarter.
South Sioux City ramped up its defense in the second quarter, employing its customary trapping style to force Homer into turning the ball over. The Lady Cardinals scored the first eight points of the second quarter to seize an 18-point advantage.
Homer did manage to fight back later in the quarter, as Katie Baker found her shooting touch. Baker tallied eight points in the first half as the Lady Knights tried to keep pace with the home team.
South Sioux City led 40-21 at the halftime break behind 14 points from junior McKenna Sims.
The teams played a tight third quarter, with South Sioux City holding a 51-31 advantage going to the fourth frame.
The Lady Cardinals again ratcheted up their defense in the fourth frame, limiting Homer to a single point as South Sioux City rolled to the victory.
Sims led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Rasmussen added 13 points to her game-high eight steals. Sophomore Nyabuay Diew tacked on 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Freshman Kyra Fischer was the fourth Lady Cardinal to reach double-figure scoring, totaling 11 points.
Baker paced Homer with 10 points, while Hannah Harris added eight points and seven rebounds.
South Sioux City will host the Wayne Lady Blue Devils tonight (Thursday) to kick off the 2017-18 regular season (4:00 p.m. JV/5:45 p.m. varsity).
Homer also opens its regular season tonight, going on the road to face off with Winnebago (5:00 p.m. JV/6:15 varsity).
